Parent Code of Conduct
As we have now moved past the first few weeks of the regular season, I want to take a moment remind everyone of the Parent Code of Conduct that you signed when registering your child with the Yellowknife Minor Hockey Association this year. This pledge is one of the keys to ensuring a respectful, positive, and supportive environment for all players, parents, coaches, and volunteers involved with Yellowknife Minor Hockey.
Please review this summary of our Parent Code of Conduct as a refresher and to help us keep fair play and respect front and centre:
- Support Your Child's Enjoyment: Remember, hockey should be a source of enjoyment for your child, not a responsibility. Let them play for their own fulfillment, not to meet our expectations.
- Encourage Fair Play: Encourage your child to play by the rules and resolve conflicts constructively. Avoid yelling or ridiculing them for mistakes or losses—positive support is invaluable to their development.
- Practice Good Sportsmanship: Show respect by applauding good plays from all teams, not just your child’s. Please refrain from coaching from the stands or criticizing players’ performance.
- Teach Effort over Winning: We emphasize that doing one’s best is as important as winning. Please encourage your child to see value in their effort, so they never feel defeated by a game’s outcome.
- Respect Coaches and Officials: Do not approach the bench during games or practices. If concerns arise, please observe a 24-hour cooling-off period and discuss privately with the coach afterward. Keep in mind that officials are also in a learning environment, and many of them are Junior Officials.
- Discourage Abuse: Verbal or physical abuse has no place in youth hockey. Whether it's toward other parents, players, volunteers, coaches or officials, Yellowknife Minor Hockey takes a zero tolerance approach in dealing with this. Let’s all work together to eliminate any form of hostility from the rink.
- Appreciate Volunteers: Our hockey program relies on dedicated volunteers, from Coaches to Directors to Governors to Managers. Please show your gratitude and respect toward everyone who makes hockey possible for our players.
Sticking to this Code of Conduct helps us create a positive and welcoming environment for everyone.
Please keep in mind that if these guidelines aren’t followed, there may be action taken by our Director of Ethics and Discipline or the YKMHA Discipline Committee.
